About us

First - let's address the obvious question: Why plebeian?

The definition shown here is probably what most of us are familiar with in today's world - but we're here to argue that it's not such a bad thing to be.

Although our designs are anything but common, some of them can probably be described as "a bit much" or even "over the top"...so we might be guilty of being unsophisticated, and that's okay by us.

We'll come out and say it right now: We're not high fashion and we're not for everyone. Our garments are high-quality and comfortable, and we love to have fun with our designs.

If you have a sense of humor and like to be comfy, congratulations! You get us, and we literally exist for you.

The history lesson:

In ancient Rome, the plebeians (also called plebs) were the general body of free Roman citizens belonging to a lower socio-economic class...or in other words, "commoners". The average plebeian was neither wealthy nor educated, and they entered the workforce at a young age. They were the hard-working citizens of Rome – farmers, craftsmen, merchants, and even soldiers – who worked to support their families and pay their taxes.

But there were many plebeians who gained knowledge and skills any way they could and improved their opportunities - changing the course of their whole lives. Even the richest Roman in history, Crassus, belonged to this social class.

Times have changed, of course! But the theme is familiar - in today's world, we can come from limited circumstances and forge our own amazing paths much easier than the Ancient Romans could...and we do it every day, across the globe.

We are the modern plebeians.

Modern Plebeian was created to celebrate all people around the world who persevere and overcome adversity every single day to achieve their goals and dreams.

If even one stitch of our apparel is on you or in your closet right now, then we have achieved ours.

We hope you will wear us while you achieve your dreams.
